Healthy winter fruits and vegetables

It is very important that our body receives proper quantity of proteins, fats, calories, carbohydrates, trace elements, vitamins, enzymes, and antioxidants. We need them for proper metabolism of the body and it helps in enhancing the immune system.

To get the optimal health benefits, we should eat various fresh fruits and vegetables that will furnish our body with necessary nutrients. We should include various colorful fruits and vegetables into our daily. They provide minerals, vitamins, and photochemical to our body needs and help in maintaining good health as well as energy levels. They also prevent diseases. Fresh fruits and vegetables also reduce the effect of aging and make you look younger. With proper intake of fresh fruits and vegetables you can prevent many diseases such as, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc. Fresh fruits and vegetables have high potassium content and have protecting effect on blood pressure. It also reduces the possibility of developing kidney stones as well as helps in decreasing bone loss. In this post we are going to discuss about 10 healthy winter fruits and vegetables.

1. Cranberries

Cranberries are mostly preferred during Thanksgiving; however, we cannot forget its delicious taste. These berries are healthy too. They help in reducing certain infections. It has good amount of Vitamin C and helps in improving your HDL level. Cranberries are processed into juice drinks, sweetened dried cranberries and sauce. Normally, cranberries are too sharp to be consumed plain and raw, as these small fruits are sour and bitter.

2. Radishes

Radishes are best part of salad. It is sweet or pungent in taste and has lots of juice. Radishes are available in white, purple, black, or red, and can be eaten cooked, pickled or raw. People also use the oil obtained from radish seeds. Radishes have a good source of vitamin C, and have a crunchy texture. You can cook them with some sugar or salt to make a side dish. You can fry them with other fresh vegetable and serve with soya sauce.

3. Blood oranges

You can include Blood oranges in your delicious winter salads, drinks, and desserts. Alike other oranges, they are rich in fiber and vitamin C. However, the deep red color of these fruits makes them eye catching. They are a great addition to your holiday meals.

4. Snow peas

Snow peas are low calorie vegetables and are full of vitamin C and vitamin K. Stir-fried snow peas are yummy. The crunchy texture makes these veggies a mouth-watering contrast in pastas. You can store them in fridge for few days only, so cook them as soon as you buy them.

5. Cabbage

Many of us confuse Cabbage with iceberg lettuce. To your surprise a cup of cabbage packs almost 100 per cent of DRI of vitamin K, fiber, and vitamin C. Similar to other cruciferous vegetables, cabbage contains photo nutrients, which helps in detoxing the body naturally.

6. Rhubarb

Rhubarb thrives during winter season and has a distinctive tart and sour taste. You can sweeten this stalk vegetable with sugar, fruit juice or even honey, to balance acidity. Rhubarb is low calorie vegetable and contains vitamin C, vitamin A, and calcium.

7. Chestnuts

Nothing like other nuts chestnuts are lower in fats and calories; on the other hand they are high in fiber. These fruits are available for a very brief time during winter months (approximately from October to December). These small fruits have a good source of vitamin C, and have a subtly sweet and nutty flavor. You won’t be finding fresh chestnuts easily, thus try to get bottled varieties or you can visit the specialty grocery stores as well.

8. Artichokes

Fresh Artichokes are available during early spring and early winter. You can conveniently buy them in a can, however, fresh artichokes are unsurprisingly savory and delicious. They are rich in vitamin C, fiber, and folate, thus they help in producing new cells.

9. Persimmon

Persimmons are sweet fruits having a unique texture, which is sometimes firm or mushy. They are rich in vitamin C and fiber. These interesting fruits add a tangy flavor to various salads. In addition to this, you can blend them to cook baked goods or make festive drinks.

10. Kale

This is one of the most delicious winter veggies. As the frost hits ground, it starts getting sweeter. It has an earthy flavor and is a great supplement various savory meals. Kale is a super food, which contains high amounts of vitamin K, vitamin A, and vitamin C and calcium. It is one of best sources of beta-carotene and antioxidants that are major players in the battle against heart disease, cancer, and few age-related chronic diseases.
